Family weekend: how to make a skating rink in the yard

Pour the rink in the yard - it sounds a little funny.Because our utilities in the winter work so that the whole city turns into one continuous skating rink. But on this uncleaned ice, only to slip and fall well, but not to play hockey or go skating.

If you are an active parent and you don’t care that children stick out in front of the TV for days, while you yourself laid the pistes in your youth and went on winter hikes and skating on the river, you’ll have a proven guide to creating a winter rink in the courtyard.

The Internet resource has learned from a fan of winter sports and also an active parent, Valentina Mikhailova, how he creates skating rinks and why it’s great. We hope his experience will inspire you.

“For the last six years, I have poured ice rinks near the house - in hockey boxes and just in yard areas,” says Valentin. - I wanted to play hockey somewhere myself and that the children in the yard would find what to do during the holidays. My friends and I decided to develop a method by which citizens can create good skating rinks without the help of officials. ”

Fish place

Before you run into the street with buckets of water, you need to find a place. Valentin Mikhailov recommends negotiating with the housing office or house manager, but he admits that he does not always do this.

“Each rink needs to be coordinated by concluding an agreement with the balance holder (those who are responsible for a specific territory). Although I almost always flooded in the wild, and it raised no questions. The main thing is that the ice should not hinder anyone. ”

It is necessary to choose a place taking into account the fact that the surface should be smooth, without hills and hollows, and lit, because in winter it gets dark early, and skating in the evening is the very thing.

“For the skating rink, you need to choose a lighted, open place with free access and at a distance from the road. Ideally, a platform with a slight slope, so that during a thaw or rain, the water immediately drains and does not destroy the surface. Next to my house there is a nine-storey building, and I dream to pour a skating rink in its shadow: the ice in such a place lasts for three weeks longer. Although in general the location does not always play the main role: several years ago we successfully poured ice on the heating main. Hockey boxes are good for hockey players, but not necessary for an ordinary ice rink.It is difficult to remove snow on them. ”

One is not a warrior on the rink

Making the rink itself is undoubtedly difficult. But you need to start with something. Valentine says that when people see a good deed, they are sure to join, there are activists and non-lazy people.

“I’ll have to start myself, but I will need help later on. It happens, I come to a potential site, where I have never been and I don’t know anyone, and everything turns out easily, with a half turn. Before filling it is necessary to hang out ads around the district: “We will make a skating rink! Need help! ”- and leave a phone number. Several people will call back in a week and ask how they can help. Such people until a certain moment with interest observe, and then are involved in the process. We have relationships like in good, good families: from each one is taken according to the possibilities and each receives according to his needs. Such local communism. Who can clean the snow - cleans, who can help with the repair of ice - helps. If the ice is smooth and durable - people will always come, and they will clear everything up. The flooder will only have to go out once a week for half an hour, to smooth a little, and then the people themselves. You won't even have to persuade anyone. ”

You can agree in advance with neighbors or friends from neighboring houses, even if they don’t immediately respond, but if they see that the ice has broken, they will definitely join the common cause.

Water for Elephants!

Most of the problems awaits a guard ready for the feat with the skating rink when searching for water for the skating rink. If you live on the first floor in the house next to the metro where the rink will be located - everything is simple: a hose + tap in your apartment. If not, it will be necessary to negotiate again with the housing office or the house manager in the house that is closest to the rink. It may be necessary to collect signatures among the tenants of this house to agree to use water. However, the sea is knee-deep to all those who take up the matter boldly, says Valentine.

“We need a long hose, which we will have to somehow hold down, and then store somewhere, because we’ll fill the rink once a little: ice needs to be regularly updated - pour at least once every two weeks.

As to the legality of using “drinking” water for such purposes, I can’t say anything. In theory, you can be obliged to put a counter. I see no problem in this: an average ice rink of 40 by 20 meters requires 55 cubic meters of cold water for the entire season. ”

One way or another, but having talked with ZHEK, you can find out how easy it is to conclude an agreement. On paper time anyway or will leave, but the rink is worth it. There is also a tricky option - agree with the tenants of the first floor, from which it will be easiest to throw a hose to the rink. Of course, you incur payment for water or share with those parents who will join you.

Fill the rink

It turns out that just pull out the tap, turn on the water and wait until the lake freezes, will not work. The water will spread, freeze nearby cars, and the ice itself will grasp from above, because in order for it to be properly measured, it will be necessary to have a very low temperature. So this option is not suitable. And the correct and proven one is:

“For a good skating rink, simple technique and manual, uniform pouring are enough. At the end of the hose, you can put on a lightweight plastic pipe (about 1.5 m), bend it in the form of a stick and, imitating gardeners swinging an electric hose, wander around the site, "smearing" the water. The main thing - to pour it in thin layers. If the water does not have time to freeze, you will have to take 10-minute breaks (although with long breaks the hose may freeze). If everything is done correctly, then until you reach the end of the site, at the beginning of the ice will be already “dry”, and you can go to a new circle. But do not continue until the previous layer is frozen. With good luck, an ideal skating rink will be ready in two to three days, but in some cases (a hummocky lawn, a large layer of snow) it can take up to two weeks. ”

Care and watering

In order for the rink to stand all winter and be suitable for skiing and safe, ice should be maintained: polished with a wet mop, cleaned up the snow. As the practice of Valentina shows, there will be no problems with snow: both children and teenagers, seeing that their skating rink overnight has piled up, are taken to help themselves. But it is better to hold the fill for adults - and the children will not get wet, and you will do it much better.

“Ice often breaks and cracks, so it needs to be repaired with a special mop with a towel. Run it on the surface - and the ice becomes mirror-clear. It is usually sufficient to carry out such a procedure once a week, depending on how actively the skating rink is used. Sometimes you have to repair it every day.

Where more useful attributes will be plastic shovels. These tools should be in the public domain - and then there will always be someone who can remove the snow. You can fasten shovels with a chain and a digital lock, the code of which people will communicate to each other. ”

So what is next?

Valentin Mikhailov advises to make the rink annual and find "sponsors" in the housing office or in the district administration. They usually have money for improvement, but the local uncles and aunts are too lazy to do it.

We hope that the experience of St. Petersburg activist Valentina Mikhailova will inspire you. In the end, you can start from your own yard and, little by little, gradually, make the life of the whole city, or even the whole country, a little bit better, more fun and more interesting.

Note also that these “homemade” type skating rinks are very popular in America and Europe, they are poured in small courtyards near private houses and in the courtyards of high-rise buildings in the city center. The main thing is to have a desire.
